To start off, we will leding a free haiku workshop at the NE Metro regional meeting of the Haiku Society of America in New York City. We also led an adult poetry workshop in Madison, NJ, and a haiku workshop for New York Teachers. And Penny and other poets read for the Edison Literary Review. Finally, although we could not be there, a piece of music for which we supplied the words premiered in San Francisco late this autumn. Northeast Metro Region Presents
Reach for the Stars
with Penny Harter & William J. Higginson
This program and workshop for beginning and experienced poets focuses on writing and sharing haiku. Learn how Japanese poets and American students and others have incorporated the sky and even outer space in the brief haiku form. At the end of the session, participants will share their poems.
This is part of a memorial program celebrating the life and work of L. A. Davidson, noted New York haiku poet and charter member of the HSA.

Explore haiku at one of our special workshops for K–12 educators. Participants learn how to compose original haiku as well as to teach and critique students’ haiku in the classroom. Special Note: Teachers who have participated in the haiku workshop at Japan Society will be eligible to submit haiku entries written by their students to the United Nations International School Haiku Competition in spring 2008.

This eight-session workshop for beginning and experienced poets focuses on writing and sharing. Sharpen existing poems and write new work in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere. Learn how and where to submit your work for publication and how to present it to an audience. Gentle affirmation and careful, specific suggestions for improvement lead to success for students. At the end of the course, participants will have an opportunity to read their poems for family and friends at an informal poetry café.

"That Jewel-Spirit . . ." Premiere—
music for SSA chorus, flute, and string orchestra or piano, by Hilary Tann
with lyrics by Penny Harter & Bashô, tr. by William J. Higginson
"That Jewel-Spirit" takes its title from a haiku by the seventeeth-century Japanese poet Matsuo Bashô, and includes the poem in Japanese and an English translation by Bill. Penny's poem "At the Top of Mount Haguro" provides the main lyric, and the three texts intertwine throughout the piece. Mount Haguro is one of The Three Sacred Mountains of Dewa, in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. Both Bashô's haiku and Penny's poem were written there, some 300 years apart. Hilary was commissioned to compose this piece in memoriam for a student at the school.
